My Top 5: Monster Hunter Edition

February is here! Being my favorite month due to its chill weather and how short it is, I’m taking the opportunity to celebrate one of the best video game franchises ever made: Monster Hunter.

Monster Hunter has been instrumental in my development as an artist. If you’re interested in knowing how, check out my previous blog where I tell you all about it. Hunting down awesome monsters and using the materials you carve from them to make cool-looking armor and weapons definitely has its appeal, even more so if you’re a fantasy enthusiast like me. With over 200 monsters in the world of Monster Hunter, it’s difficult to not be in awe with many of them. However, there are those particular beasts that really stay with you, be it because they proved to be worthy opponents, or because their design hit all the notes in your heart. Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are my top 5 monsters from Monster Hunter.

Diablos

A name like Diablos is sure to inspire fear in the heart of any hunter, and when you go head-to-head with this beast, you’ll know why. Its skull-like face features a jagged mouth that inspires horror, and above it, two monstruous horns point at its next victim. To top it off, the Diablos has a loud, high pitch screech that doesn’t quite match its physical appearance. This, however, only makes this creature all the more alluring. It’s not enough that this monster is able to brutalize you with its horns and bludgeoning tail, but it can also dive underground and attack you from below with a lethal leap.

Lagiacrus

An underwater sea leviathan with wide jaws

The perfect embodiment of a leviathan. Being a creature of the depths, the Lagiacrus mixes its environment with its electric power, a deadly combination guaranteed to pulverize you on the spot. Sinuous movements and a long jaw make this slippery monster a force to be reckoned with. Whether you’re close or at a distance, the Lagiacrus will make sure you pay for invading its territory, be it with its maw or its lightning blast. This serpentine creature dwells mostly on the sea, although it is more than capable of kicking your butt on land.

Rathalos

A Rathalos

Predictable? Maybe. Basic? Most definitely. I don’t care. Rathalos is the OG flagship monster of the Monster Hunter franchise, and to me, it has become a fundamental element to the series as a whole. How can anyone turn down a classic, fire-breathing dragon? This fiery wyvern checks all the boxes for anyone who is looking for a classic knight vs monster scenario. Fire balls, fire streams, poisonous claws, spiked tail and a dangerous bite make up the arsenal of weapons available to this creature. The Rathalos has subspecies known as the Azure Rathalos and the Silver Rathalos, which are stronger. While I love the Rathalos in all its glory, I have to bow down to the original King of the Skies.

Pink Rathian

A flying wyvern known as Pink Rathian

The Rathian is the female counterpart to the Rathalos. Personally, I always make it a point to equip myself with Rathian armor due to its skills and overall decent stats at the beginning of a journey. While I appreciate the Queen of the Lands, my heart truly beats for the sub-species known as the Pink Rathian. The Pink Rathian’s moveset is similar to its green version, except cooler. Her tail-spin attack packs a punch (a lethal one), and is second only to her breakdancing tail flip which can cause great damage while leaving little to no opening for you to attack.

Stygian Zinogre

A Stygian Zinogre

While the electric doggo known as the Zinogre has won the hearts of many fans, I have to be the edgelord asking “Does it come in black?” The Stygian Zinogre is basically a feral, giant wolf with the power of dragons. Its body crackles with blood-red static, which it uses to demolish your hopes and dreams. To top it all off, its palette is red, black and white, which is the best color combination for anyone who ever experienced My Chemical Romance or Black Sabbath. In addition to its badass look, the Stygian Zinogre is relentless in its attacks. It combines dragon power with its claws and tail, delivering overwhelming blows, and requiring careful strategy to beat.
