Vejigantes are a staple of Caribbean culture. These entities used to represent a ridiculed version of the defeated moors, said to represent the devil and its demons, according to the church. Over time, and as it tends to happen throughout history, they became an image associated with certain festivities in Puerto Rico. Vejigantes would run around the street, hitting naughty people with a vejiga (cow’s bladder) and having all sorts of fun. I’ve become fascinated with these creatures, and I now seek to elevate them and worship them. To me, vejigantes are more than just folklore.

Vejigantes are a symbol of Caribbean strength and identity.
